April-July 2013 Report: Part 2 of 3

Vogan Christian Academy

This school year has been one of the most amazing ones!  As the Principal, my favorite moment of the day is morning devotions at the school.

Ruth getting ready to glean in Boaz’s field.

God has given us children who are so attentive and enjoy listening to the Bible stories.  This year we covered the books of Judges, Ruth, and 1 Samuel in our devotions and all the children in the school are working on memorizing the book of Mark.  Not a small thing as many of you know!  A lot has been taught about God, Christ, and the Bible and we pray that down the road, through the help of the Holy Spirit, these children can be used by God to turn the whole world upside down.

God has been very good and faithful to us in so many ways!!

   –              –We did not know we will be able to have the school this year but we did and went from 42 students to 120 students!

                –  We were not sure if we would be able to continue our school feeding program, but we went from feeding 42 children only 2 meals a week last year, to feeding 120 children 3 lunches a week!

–                –  We began the school with church members bringing water for the children to drink and flush the toilets to having running water with no water bill!

-We praise God for electricity at the site!

Last week was the final week of school, and we took the whole school on a field trip.  Before leaving we were able to distribute our new school shirts which have our mascot, the lighthouse, and our school name and initials on both the front and back to them which was such a blessing!

Then, using our vehicle plus three buses, we first took them to the industrial site of phosphate mining where they were able to watch a video and ask questions on the whole process of phosphate mining (very educational),

then we were able to see a house that was used in the transportation of slaves (after it had become illegal), from that house we walked to the ocean which some have seen for the first time (even though they are only 20 min. from it).

From there, we went to the airport, which several of our teachers have never been to.  Although we were not allowed to go inside or see the inside of a plane, we did have permission to eat and rest at the airport garden and watch the planes take off.

After eating, we hopped back in our vehicles to go to independence square to see the House of Representatives and the inside of the museum.

Even though it was a very long and eventful day, we received reports that some of our children did not sleep that night as they kept talking to each other and their parents/care givers about all the things they have seen!

One of the government regulations here in Togo is that all the 5th grade students have to take a national exam in order to move to the 6th grade, which is secondary school.  And the primary schools are always academically measured by these tests.  Well, our school is new, but this year 2 of our students, Maceline and Patricia (Edith), tied for 2ndposition for the entire region!  We were so proud and encouraged by their hard work!

Dakota & Dasha

A little over a month ago we welcomed two American helpers in our home, Dakota Huffman and Dasha Love.  They are going to be our English and physical education teachers for the next school year and will be staying until April.  They just recently got engaged and we praise God for their sacrifice and willingness to come and help.  Please pray for them as Togo is much different than the States and they will be learning a lot.  Pray for them to be healthy and blessed throughout their stay here.  Our future posts will have some of their experiences, so look for it!

Already getting some experience with teaching “Speaking English”
